Back in December, I got to sit down with Jaylyn and get to know the other side of the artist. Aside from being a model, Jaylyn is a musician that tells us what inspires her when making her art.

~

Angid

I'm here with Jaylyn. Want to start by giving everyone your social media handles?

Jaylyn

My Instagram handle is jaylynshea and my TikTok is also jaylynshea.

Angid

How long have you been modeling?

Jaylyn

I have not been modeling for too long. It’s always been something that I’ve been wanted to experiment with. It’s very empowering and I love other women as well. I love watching them.

Angid

So would you say that that was one of your inspirations? You got into modeling just watching other women do it?

Jaylyn

Absolutely.

Angid

So I am aware that you do music. How did that come about?

Jaylyn

It’s always been about expression. Since I was younger, I just wanted to express myself and that was the way that I did it and I’ve kept it with me. Now that I’m an adult, I need it. I need my outlet. I just hope that whoever relates to it - because when you listen to your favorite songs, I feel it very deeply and it affects you very deeply. I hope I can do that for other people.

Angid

And what’s an artist that inspired you and affects you when you make your music?

Jaylyn

Recently Doechii. I listened to the album, the most recent album and it was great.

Angid

And what about her drew you to Doechii?

Jaylyn

She’s very nonforgiving and speaks real truth, and making women feel like they’re bad, like bad girl music.

Angid

The music that makes you feel good.

Jaylyn

Exactly. What makes you feel good. Empowerment. Everything about her music makes me feel that way.

Angid

Has there ever been a piece of imagery or a moment in your day to day life that made you think “I can make a song about that”?

Jaylyn

I think humanity in general. Just watching them. When you pass by everyday and just see different faces and just the way we socialize with each other, and interact with each other in all kinds of different ways. Whether it’s anger or sweet little moments that you share. Just humanity in general experiences.

Angid

Speaking of experiences, you just did a music video with Eyecam. Tell me about that.

Jaylyn

It was really nice because I got to tap into my… I would say a more vulnerable side of me, and get to show that more because we all have vulnerable side to us. And I wanted to show that we are two different people in a way. We have a side that we show to everyone, the world, and then we have a side we kind keep away, tuck away, because it’s a little bit darker. So when I was able to shoot to with Eyecam, it was super fun because I was super comfortable in just letting of that out and going crazy. You know, screaming, really trying to represent the emotion that comes into music and art. Emotion as general as humans.

Angid

After viewing the video, I wanna ask what inspired that look? What came into your mind when you decided to go forward with that creative decision for the look for that video?

Jaylyn

To be honest… I just liked the look! I liked contacts. I wanted to be a creature, essentially. To represent my emotions as kind of this dark alter ego.

Angid

And can we expect some new music from you soon?

Jaylyn

Yes, yes. Absolutely. I’m looking for studio spaces, because I do it in my room mostly. But I want it to have that nice, crisp, clean sound. So I’m looking.

Angid

Do you want to talk about what that’s like?

Jaylyn

Yeah, there are some spaces I’m looking at. My friend, she put me onto another space too. It’s like $30 an hour. Another I found was $50 an hour with a two hour minimum, you know? So it’s just about figuring out your budget and timing everything. I have other life stuff happening, but music will always be there. It will always be apart of who I am.

Angid

Just before we close out, what genre of music do you think you fit into?

Jaylyn

I really like shoegaze. Very airy, very reverb, a lot of deep bass. I love synth. Music of all kind, just makes you feel. It heals you. It heals you truly, and I want to do that for other people…. Music is universal. You can experiment with every kind of genre there is.

Angid

Thank you so much, Jaylyn.

Jaylyn

Thank you for having me.
